How come the Council of Nicea decided on Jesus' birth and death dates?

Indeed, isn't it interesting to note that they had to convene and hold a number of councils to get their collective lies straight with one another? Make sure they're all on the same page selling the same BS. It was politically developed, over time, by influential men.
