What are creative things to do along with water purification?

This can be theoretical but needs to have some sort of factual basis. The technology does not have to currently be there is what I mean. For instance, along with gathering water from the earth you could extract rare metals from it. Can anybody come up with other clever ideas that could be done during this process?
