Buddhists: Through breathing meditation is it possible to completely uproot delusions of self-identification?
It is my desire to become a Sotapanna in this lifetime, (so that I may attain enlightenment in a future life for the happiness of all living beings) and I have read that the main way is to uproot these delusions of self (sakkaya-ditthi: the view that mistakenly identifies any of the physical or mental aggregates as "self"), realizing the empty, co-dependant nature of phenomena. This as a consequence is said to extinguish the karma of our past, present and future unwholesome acts (akusala kamma). During one particular single-pointed breath meditation there was a delightful experience of the "beautiful breath" which is the stage before Jhana (total absorbtion of the object of meditation) - in this peaceful stage it felt very blissful, there was a oneness that went beyond concepts such as time, and there was a feeling of "purification" - is this purification what I am looking for? I suspect it was the purification of kamma due to delusions of self being let go (and disappearing) but I am not sure, as I still have delusions of self now. Will this change with attainment of the Jhanas?
