What makes America "free"?

People around here are always saying we're a free country, but I don't understand what makes our country different from any other. I mean, English royalty are still subject to law. I honestly don't see how we're so different, or, for that matter, why people call us the Melting Pot. I'm pretty sure England and France are racially diverse, so I don't see what the big deal is.
