Would French peasants in the 18th century know royalty by sight?

I was curious as to how significant political personalties were to the French commoner during the 18th century before the French revolution occurred. Was there facial recognition on a massive societal level of most of the royalty? Or could royalty simply dress in common garb and take no risk of being recognized by the public.
