Would French peasants in the 18th century know royalty by sight?

I was curious as to how significant political personalties were to the French commoner during the 18th century before the French revolution occurred. Was there facial recognition on a massive societal level of most of the royalty? Or could royalty simply dress in common garb and take no risk of being recognized by the public. Thank you for any input you all can supply.
